My Pipeline service started to crap out Thursday night and finally died on Friday afternoon. A reasonably competitant support tech suggested I come in to trade in my modem as it was possible it was damaged during the storms. There was a line of people also wanting to trade modems and cable boxes. I got home and the stupid thing wouldn't even power up! They gave me a 1.5A power supply for a modem rated 1A max!
I had to wait until Monday morning to pickup another modem and couldn't test it until after work. When it didn't work I called tech support again. They said I would have to wait until Thursday for a support person to check the wiring in the house and between the house and the pole. A few hours later I saw a Charter van down the street and by 6:00 there were two trucks working in the yard of a house two doors down. They said they only knew of one house that was out of service even though I had been calling nearly every day.
They had it working by 8:00 but I'm still thinking about moving to the business plan. Hopefully they can fix an outage in less than three days.
Update: Charter sent a form letter apologizing for the performance issues and promising better service in the future. They also increased the download speed limit to 2 mbs (from 768 kbs) for the next four months. For the record, I'm happy to have been using Charter Pipeline for nearly three years. It's still the best broadband option available in St. Louis.
